Location Showdown: Beach
I get that choosing a location for your family photos is important, so I’ve decided to create a few blog posts highlighting my favorite location themes in New England.
Here’s part two of my Location Showdown series: Beach
Beaches on the North Shore are a perfect setting for family photo sessions. The neutral color of the sand, the reflection of sky on the water, the sunlight behind the grass and dunes all add depth and texture to your gallery without overpowering. It’s like heaven for us photographers.
The beach is special because it gives families space to open up and be themselves. Kids love the freedom, being barefoot, all the sensory elements like sand and waves and finding shells. It’s very unstructured which I personally love. It makes my goal of capturing genuine moments easier, making your photographs feel honest and alive.
The light is another major win for the beach, so let’s take a moment to appreciate the sky. The soft, diffused light on partly cloudy day is especially flattering. And if we get a sunset? The glow and color in the sky is so special and a perfect backdrop for epic family portraits.
The best time for the beach is June, August and September. During the summer, weekdays are the best option because it gets very crowded—even at 6pm. And don’t write off the beach in early fall. The texture and color is all still there but with no crowds. It’s stunning.
I’m booking sessions already for 2026, so reach out now if your heart is set on the beach. Mine always is!
